We conclude our season with "Carmina Burana." These very secular songs from Benediktbeuern, set to music by Carl Orff, are among the most popular choral works of the 20th century. They ignite a zest for life, for dance and pleasure, and, with the goddess Fortuna at their center, are a powerful symbol of the mutability and unpredictability of human existence. After the successful premiere in 1937, Orff wrote to his publisher: "Everything I have written so far, and which you have unfortunately printed, you can now pulp! My collected works begin with Carmina Burana."

Philip Hartman in Nietzsche kontra Wagner at Folkoperan

På scen står skådespelaren Jonas Karlsson som Friedrich Nietzsche tillsammans med operasångarna Vilma Skäryd och Philip Hartman, pianisten Dmitry Tyapkin samt Folkoperans orkester under musikalisk ledning av Henrik Schaefer. I föreställningen hör vi musik av Wagner, Liszt och Nietzsches egna kompositioner samt Georges Bizet – tonsättaren som Nietzsche vände sig till efter uppbrottet med sin forne vän.

Publiksuccén får nypremiär 8 april 2026! Regissören Eirik Stubø återvänder till Folkoperan med ett av operalitteraturens mest mångfacetterade kvinnoporträtt och med den kanske allra vackraste musiken – Puccinis Tosca. En thrillerartad opera som utspelar sig i en tid av politisk oro och krig. I centrum står operasångerskan Floria Tosca, hennes älskade, konstnären och frihetskämpen Mario Cavaradossi och den grymme, maktfullkomlige polischefen Scarpia. Ett triangeldrama som skapat för Stubøs minimalistiska och djuplodade personregi. På Folkoperans intima scen blir Tosca till en gastkramande närstudie av passion, maktmissbruk, uppror och skräck. Ett dödligt drama med operasångerskan Tosca och Puccinis makalöst vackra musik i centrum. Folkoperans musikaliska ledare Henrik Schaefer lyfter triangeldramat tillsammans med en blåsorkester. Här söker man efter det intima istället för det pompösa i Puccinis musik. Det ges plats åt nya musikaliska nyanser som förstärker berättelsen och dramat.

HSO – Pascal's Passion Finale – The Power of Art with Berlioz Welcome to a dark, brave and absolutely fantastic season finale! We open the doors to an unusually moving season finale – an evening where passion is given free rein and art is at the center! Maxime Pascal guides us through Hector Berlioz's two monumental works: the dramatic Symphonie Fantastique and the rarely heard sequel Lélio, ou Le retour à la vie. Prepare for a musical experience containing everything from the depths of horror and nightmare to the triumph of liberation. Symphonie Fantastique (1830) is not only one of the most colorful program symphonies in music history (i.e., where the music has a plot), but also an autobiographical work. Here we follow the young composer Lélio's journey from romantic love to devastating hallucinations in which he sees himself beheaded in his opium intoxication. The work reflects Berlioz's own unhappy love for the actress Harriet Smithson, whose feelings he could not win. The music depicts an artist's inner struggle and dissolution – a horror film in sound, filled with nightmares and horrific images. But it doesn’t end there, thankfully. In Lélio, ou Le retour à la vie (1832), the composer Lélio wakes up from his intoxication. Instead of getting stuck in despair, he chooses a different path – art, and thus, music. Lélio is precisely a tribute to music as a healing force, a path beyond heartache and despair. In this work, which alternates between music and monologue, the young composer is allowed to reflect on his ability to rise from the darkness and find new meaning. To hear both Symphonie Fantastique and Lélio in the same concert is a rare experience – a dramatic journey from despair to liberation and from night-black doom to the triumph of light. In Lélio, Berlioz explains that art – and above all music – has the power to heal and renew, and to give us hope for a future even after the greatest difficulties.

Felix Mendelssohn filled his magnificent Second Symphony with festive fanfares, roaring orchestral cascades, and atmospheric choirs to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press. The first thing Gutenberg printed with his revolutionary invention was the Bible, and there Mendelssohn found verses that praise both God and enlightenment. When Mendelssohn’s cantata symphony is performed in Berwaldhallen, the Swedish Radio Choir will be joined by the Västerås Sinfonietta and soloists and conductor Simon Crawford-Phillips.
