Matthew began his conducting studies at the age of 16 at the Junior college of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, under the instruction of the Polish conductor Ewa Strusinska. During his time at the JRNCM, Matthew founded the JRNCM Sinfonia which gave 2 highly successful concerts, the last one in June 2018 which focused on music inspired by Scotland, and included Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ Symphony, and Bruch’s ‘Scottish’ Fantasy.
Over the past few years, Matthew has taken numerous masterclasses with Jorma Panula, David Zinman, Johannes Schlaefli, Bjarte Engeset, Gerard Korsten and Sian Edwards. In March 2020, Matthew was invited to take part in the Critical Orchestra program, organised by the Dirigentenforum and led by Simone Young (conductor) and Lothar Strauss (Concertmaster of Staatskapelle Berlin). He has also assisted Simone Young during her Guest conducting engagement with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in February 2020 and again during her visit to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in October 2021.
