Our Kristoffer Töyrä as Colline in La Boheme at GöteborgsOperan

La Bohème Opera in four acts by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924). Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa after Henri Murger’s novel. Once, we were all going to live forever. Puccini’s beloved opera.

‘La Bohème’ is easy to love. In four short acts, Puccini captures the recklessness of youth – as it blossoms, wilts then dies.

In Paris, young poet Rodolfo bumps into a neighbour in the dark. He remarks how cold her hand is, and she tells him her name is Mimì. The start of a love affair can be as simple as that. But something is wrong with Mimì. She seems ill, and the couple’s and their friends’ intensive lifestyle doesn’t help matters. When spring comes to Paris, it doesn’t only bring life. And love does not conquer all.

The Göteborg Opera’s successful production from 2020, directed by Max Webster, is set in a dreary 1970’s Paris; a time and place where bohemian intellectuals, student revolts and protest marches reawakened dreams of a better, more just society. Sopranos Ida Falk Winland and Matilda Sterby alternate as Mimí, while tenor Adam Frandsen interprets Rodolfo. Conductors Giordano Bellincampi and Martyna Szymczak take turns in setting Puccini’s music free to fly as high as these young adults’ dreams.
